We analyzed 7,469 MCP servers indexed across MCPFind's 21 categories and ranked them by the clearest signal available: GitHub stars. No other MCP directory can produce this ranking because no other directory indexes this many servers. The list below shows which servers the broader developer community has validated with real usage, not which ones have the best marketing. It also shows which categories consistently produce high-quality tools, so you can narrow your search before browsing individual server pages. If you are new to MCP entirely, read what is MCP first, then come back to this ranking once you understand what these servers actually do.
How Does MCPFind Measure MCP Server Popularity?
We use GitHub stars as the primary popularity signal for MCP servers. Stars are not a perfect proxy for active usage, but they represent community interest over time and correlate with maintenance quality, documentation quality, and real-world adoption.
The ranking is drawn from live directory data, not an editorial list. We pull star counts directly from GitHub repository metadata for each server in the index. That means high-star counts on this list reflect what the broader developer community has actually validated, not what any vendor wants you to think is popular.
One important context note: some of the highest-ranked servers belong to large open-source projects that added MCP support in 2025 or 2026. Their star counts reflect the full project's adoption history, not just MCP-specific interest. We include them because they are real, functional MCP servers that you can use today. The ranking gives you accurate data. How you interpret each entry's star count relative to its history is worth a quick look before you install.
What Are the Top 10 MCP Servers by GitHub Stars?
Here are the ten most-starred MCP servers in the MCPFind index as of this publication date, pulled from 7,469 total servers across 21 categories.
Netdata leads at 78,193 stars. It is a real-time infrastructure monitoring tool in the AI and machine learning category that added a full MCP interface for querying host metrics, alerts, and node health from Claude. tldraw follows at 46,031 stars in the devtools category, exposing its collaborative diagramming and whiteboard tools through MCP. Chrome DevTools MCP sits at 31,292 stars, giving Claude direct access to browser debugging, network inspection, and DOM queries.
Oh My Posh Validator (21,945 stars) rounds out the devtools group, followed by Agent Skills Search Server (14,109 stars) in the search category, MCP Registry Server (6,589 stars), and Airweave Search (6,092 stars). PraisonAI (5,725 stars) and ai.klavis/strata (5,675 stars) both represent the AI and machine learning category. XcodeBuildMCP (4,871 stars) closes the top ten with iOS and macOS build automation through Claude.
These numbers update as star counts change in the underlying repositories, so the live MCPFind directory reflects the current state more accurately than any static post.
Which MCP Categories Have the Highest-Quality Servers?
Star count averages by category reveal where the community has concentrated investment. The AI and machine learning category leads with an average of 98.93 stars across 961 servers, the highest average of any category on MCPFind. That reflects both the maturity of tools in this space and the fact that AI infrastructure projects accumulate stars faster than narrower integrations.
The cloud category (161 servers, avg 60.71 stars) and search category (551 servers, avg 51.80 stars) both rank well above the overall directory average. These categories contain well-maintained commercial and community projects: Cloudflare's MCP server leads cloud at 3,566 stars, and Agent Skills Search leads the search category at 14,109 stars.
Devtools is the largest category at 3,089 servers with an average of 35.01 stars. It is the volume leader for a reason: developer tooling was the first major use case for MCP, so the category has had the longest time to accumulate both entries and stars.
Categories with lower averages, like productivity (13 servers, avg 0.77 stars) and ecommerce (64 servers, avg 0.03 stars), are not lower quality so much as earlier-stage. Many useful servers in those categories simply have not been public long enough to accumulate significant star counts.
What Do the Most Popular MCP Servers Have in Common?
Across the top-ranked servers, three patterns repeat. First, they solve a universal problem rather than a niche one. Netdata monitors any infrastructure. tldraw handles any diagram. Chrome DevTools works on any website. The broadest use cases attract the broadest communities.
Second, the top servers have strong parent projects behind them. Several entries in the top ten are maintained by companies or well-funded open-source foundations, not solo contributors. That backing means faster update cycles, better documentation, and lower abandonment risk.
Third, most top servers have been available for more than a year in some form, even if MCP support was added recently. Community trust takes time to build. A server that launched in January 2026 with 500 stars is growing faster than one from 2024 with 1,000 stars. When you spot a recently released server with a fast-climbing star count, that trajectory is often a more useful signal than the raw number.
How Do You Find Rising MCP Servers Before They Reach the Top Rankings?
The top ten by stars are well-documented and widely discussed. If you want to find servers before they hit the top, focus on recently updated projects in categories where you already work.
MCPFind shows the last-push date for every server in the index. Filtering by recent activity within a specific category, like search or cloud, surfaces active projects that have not yet accumulated the stars to make a general popularity list. These are often the servers where you can find and report bugs, contribute improvements, and build familiarity before the wider community catches on.
The finance category (34 servers, avg 41.76 stars) and documentation category (114 servers, avg 31.25 stars) are both worth watching right now. Both have a handful of high-starred anchors surrounded by newer, actively maintained projects that are gaining traction as more teams adopt MCP for those workflows.
